From this class I expect and hope to develop a opinion and belief about different ethical issues that the medical field faces. As a nurse i will be faced with ethical issues everyday when treating all different types of patients. I hope with the different perspectives that are introduced to me i will be able to develop my own sense of awareness on different ethical issues i will be faced with. Overall my hope is to understand these ethical issues from a patient perspective to help be become a well rounded nurse.
ReplyDeleteI am Emily Brandt! I am a triplet i have a brother and a sister as part of my trio. I have wanted to be a nurse since i was a sophomore in high school when I became one of the main care takers for my grandfather. I currently work at St. Elizabeth Edgewood as a nursing assistant on a medical surgical floor and I love it! My future career goals is to eventually get some type of masters degree in nursing. I would love to specialize in wound care as a nurse. My personal goal is to complete a half marathon either after i graduate or even this year. I have been a runner for about 8 years now and it is still the best therapy i have with stress in my life. I am excited to explore the different topics that we will be going over this semester!
My name is Victoria McCarty, but I go by Tori. I am considered a senior at the college, based on credit hours, but I am in my third year of the nursing program. I run track and cross country for TMC. After earning my BSN, I aspire get a job as a nurse and go to the University of Louisville part time to get a degree in music therapy. I want to work with military veterans who are dealing with PTSD, and also those with depression. I believe that music and patient-centered care have a lot of power together. I think this course will be very relevant to my career goals and I am excited for the discussions we will have throughout the semester.
ReplyDeleteTori,
DeleteI think the career path you're planning on going into is so interesting. Abnormal psychology is a very interesting field to me and PTSD falls under that. I'm looking forward to discussion with you!
Tori,
DeleteI think that working with military veterans would be an amazing job, and would be very rewarding. Music therapy is very interesting, I have a friend who is going to school for that degree now.
Emily, I would love to talk about what you have learned about abnormal psychology so far! Our desired fields definitely have things in common!
DeleteAbbie, I'm glad you agree with me about working with veterans. In my mind, there are not many jobs that are more rewarding! Where is your friend going to school for music therapy?
Tori,
DeleteI really admire your goal of working with veterans. My brother served in the army for 7 years until he was medically discharged and he suffers from PTSD. I think music therapy would greatly benefit those who are suffering. This is off the topic of nursing, but i read an interesting article on therapy dogs for veterans who suffer from PTSD and traumatic brain injury that you may want to look in to just for fun!
Amanda,
DeleteI am sorry to hear about your brother. My dream is to help those dealing with the type of pain that he is dealing with. He will be in my prayers. I will look into therapy dogs. That is an interesting type of therapy, but it makes a lot of sense! Dogs bring me a lot of joy. Do you remember the name of the article or have a link to it by chance?
Tori I agree with you about your ideas on patient-centered care and factoring music into it is creative and very beneficial to patients. Your goals are awesome keep with them I think the music therapy is an awesome way to use your nursing degree.
ReplyDeleteEmily, thank you for the encouragement! I am hoping that I can use the two degrees together to provide the best possible care for my patients. I get excited when I think about my future now!
DeleteMy name is Krista Summe. I am a junior Sports and Entertainment Marketing major double majoring with Business Administration. I have plans to continue my education in Law School after I graduate. I play softball for the college and am an only child.
ReplyDeleteI hope to learn more about the medical side of ethics during this class. My major doesn't have much to do with anything medical, but when I go to law school I hope to be some type of sports attorney and this could deal a lot more with medical ethics. I hope this class is just a first step for me into my medical future. I believe medical ethics is something that can benefit every single person in the world.
Krista, your major is so interesting to me & it definitely seems like you have big plans for your future. I think that you will more than likely run into a lot of ethical dilemmas in law school and once you become an attorney, especially if it has a basis in sports. I'm sure this class will be very useful to you.
DeleteKrista,
DeleteI think that this class will be very helpful for you since you want to be a sports attorney. I think your major is very interesting and it would be very cool to be a sports attorney. I think that in that field you would run into a lot of ethical issues and I hope this class will be able to help you in your career path.
Krista your career path is very interesting how you are mixing sports and law. Learning about the different ethical dilemmas faced in medicine with help you achieve your goal of learning more about the medical side. Good luck with school!
DeleteMy name is Demi Welte & I have one older brother who has just recently passed his Paramedic exam and is now a licensed Paramedic. I live on a huge farm where we raise beef cattle & I drive about an hour to school each day. I am very passionate about working out and am currently on a Crossfit competition team. This weekend I will be competing in a competition up in Detroit that I am very excited about. I work for St. E as a Home Hospice CNA and I have found it to be a very intense but rewarding job. After I obtain my Bachelors in Nursing, I hope to continue my schooling and possibly become a Nurse Anesthetist. Just like Emily Brandt, my personal goals seem to be centered around fitness, as well as nursing, mainly because I rely on it to relieve most of my stress.
ReplyDeleteI am very excited about this class because ethical issues are always so interesting to me. By the end of this course, I expect to be able to examine ethical dilemmas from different viewpoints and speak about matters going on in the world today. Ethical dilemmas are very relevant in the career I am pursuing and in everyday life in general. As a nurse, there will be many times that ethics and opinions will be questioned and my hope is to be able to speak about matter while looking at the situation as a whole instead of only through my beliefs.
Demi,
DeleteI too find health and fitness to be a great outlet for stress. Being on a Crossfit team sounds very interesting! I wish you good luck at your competition this weekend. I also look forward to hearing your perspectives and discussions in this class.
Demi,
DeleteI'm just amazed at how driven you are. Any way you can slide some of that determination my way?
Good luck on your Crossfit competition this weekend!
Demi,
DeleteI have some friends that do Crossfit just for fun, but I agree with Tonya, being on a Crossfit team sounds interesting! Good luck at your competition! With your motivation and passion about nursing as well as your interest in ethical issues I'm also looking forward to hearing your perspectives and discussions in class.
Demi,
DeleteBeing a year ahead of me in the program, have you looked into potential grad schools? I always like to exchange information with other students who are on the same career path as myself. Also, I think examining moral and ethical dilemmas from various view point will ultimately makes us not only better nurses but also better members of society, one's whose ability to empathize with opposing viewpoints will be valuable.
Demi,
DeleteIt sounds like being a Home Hospice CNA is something you are very passionate about. I could definitely see where this job could be very trying on your patience at times. I could also see where you would run into a lot of ethical issues with your job as well. It seems like this class will be perfect for you. Hopefully you will be able to use the theories we learn to help you understand why people you take care of make the decisions they do.
My name is Tonya Canafax. I am a junior nursing major, and love my major. I have a half brother and sister that are 22 years older than I am. I live in a very rural community and commute a little over an hour to school. I have to dogs that I absolutely adore. I just got engaged last October and am very excited about this! I am very passionate about health and nutrition. Like Demi and Emily, I find fitness as a very powerful stress reliever. I currently work as a nurse assistant at St. Elizabeth hospital on a Urology unit and am very pleased with my job.
ReplyDeleteI am very excited about this class because it is an integral part of my career field. Ethical dilemmas are a part of every day life as a nurse, and I hope that this class will provide me with various perspectives on these kinds of issues. It is my hope that I will be able to see these ethical problems with an open mind and from every perspective and be able to make an informed, educated decision.
Tonya,
DeleteI have a half brother who is almost 10 years older than me, not as bad but still up there. I think it's really neat that you already have a job as a nurse in a great hospital. Congratulations on your engagement!
Tonya,
DeleteI have two older brothers who are 12 and 5 years older than I am, so I understand a little bit of the age gap. Congratulations on your engagement, and good luck with your final years of nursing. I also have two dogs at my house, my parents have a toy poodle and I have a labordoodle/Shihtzu mix, what kind of dogs do you have?
My name is Lauren Wolfer, I am a junior nursing student. I am looking forward to what this class has to offer and how it may impact my future career. As a future nurse I am sure there will be many ethical dilemma that arise. I have a solid background in Catholicism, I know what my faith tells me as far as right and wrong but in the hospital I know that issue and circumstances may alter or change my perception.
ReplyDeleteI currently work at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, I work on a Telemetry care unit, where we monitor people heart conditions and help treat them. I love my job very much and I wouldn't change a thing about it! Working at St. Elizabeth has affirmed that I am meant to be nurse.
Lauren,
DeleteI'm glad that you have so much love for your career choice. This class should play a huge role in helping you address issues that you may encounter in your career as a nurse so that you can further assist people not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally.
My name is Michaela Riggs. What I hope to achieve out of this class is the ability to be compassionate and understanding of other people's viewpoints in the event that they must make difficult and life altering decisions in the face of death, whether their own or a loved one. While I am a pre-vet major and I don't believe I will experience the events depicted in the documentary to that extreme, one of my jobs includes working at a veterinary hospital as a vet's assistant, which means that I witness several people every day who euthanize their pets, some of whom consider their pets a part of the family and multiple others which only have their pets for a family.
ReplyDeleteI am a junior biology major with a pre-vet focus, as I mentioned before, and after graduating from TMC, I hope to either attend graduate school at Auburn, Purdue, or The University of Illinois and study veterinary science with a focus on large animals. I currently work three jobs and am going to school full time, and I am originally from Clay City, Indiana, which is a very small farming community about an hour and a half southwest of Indianapolis. Our town is so small that there is no need for a stop light, and if you blink while you drive through it you'll miss it. I graduated from a senior class of 63 students, most of whom continued on to be farmers.
Michaela,
DeleteIt is so interesting to hear about other people's hometowns, especially when they are so small! I graduated with a class of almost 400 people, which was the biggest that my high school had ever had. It is also cool to see you go on to become a vet, while most of your class went on to become farmers.
Michaela, I think it is very cool that you come from a very small hometown, where it seems not many people actually venture out, & that you were able to overcome that. I'm also from a very small farming community so I understand.
DeleteMy name is Emily Holton and I am a junior psychology and criminal justice major. My dad was a police officer so the criminal justice sort of runs in the family. I am currently working three jobs, going to school full time, and I am an RA, so I am in charge of 32 freshman girls. After graduation I plan on getting a Masters degree in a field of criminal justice and a Ph.D in behavioral psychology. This class has a little to do with my psychology major, so I am excited to see how I can tie these concepts into my major. I am looking forward to the case studies and the group discussion. I am an open minded person and I love being able to see from other people's viewpoints. I am hoping to get new perspectives on very controversial topics.
ReplyDeleteEmily,
DeleteLike you, nursing sort of runs in my family as well. My grandma is a retired Hospice nurse and my aunt is a nurse in the Cardio Cath Lab at Good Sam. It's amazing that you are working three jobs, going to school and are a RA. You must be very busy!
Emily,
DeleteWow! With going to school full time, being an RA, and working three jobs, you must be very busy! That also would take a lot of self-discipline, and determination. Due to my experiences that I encountered while in my mental health clinical, psychology is a very rewarding area of study. Good luck!
Emily,
DeleteYou are a busy girl! That is awesome that you can work three jobs, double major, and be an RA. I also am looking forward to hearing different controversial topics that we discuss in class.
Em, you are a busy girl! But I know you and you'll get through it! Keep your mind focused! I am excited that I get to have so many classes with you this semester! And that you decided to have a psychology background as well!
DeleteEmily,
DeleteI am with you in the fact that the class has little to do with my major. However, I am also very excited to find ways to relate this class to both my current major and my future. My father is also a police officer so I am able to relate to you in that respect. I think there are many ways that we will be able to relate this class to our lives and to our majors. I hope you have a great semester!
My name is Morgan Doll. I am a sophomore nursing major. I'm the oldest of three girls, my younger sisters are 13 and 17. My family is filled with nurses, so I've known I wanted to be a nurse since I was younger. I work as a waitress on the weekends while going to school full time. In high school I was able to work at Good Samaritan Hospital during the summers and it confirmed that being a nurse is the career path I wanted to follow. I hope to graduate with a BSN, after graduation I'm hoping to work at a hospital in Cincinnati maybe in a NICU. Therefore, this class will be helpful because I'm sure ethical issues will be something I will encounter. I'm looking forward to being able to learn new perspectives so I can be understanding and looking at the issue with an open mind instead of just my own perspective and beliefs.
ReplyDeleteMorgan,
DeleteI think it's great that you've actually had an experience that reinforced your wanting to become a nurse. It's always good to get some experience in the field that you're majoring in! I also am looking for new perspectives from this class, since I feel like my views are pretty much set-in-stone at this point.
Morgan,
DeleteI think it's awesome you were able to work in a hospital even before college, I'm sure that just made everything so much easier as far as being sure you know what you want to do. I think working in a NICU would be so interesting, I briefly thought about being a nurse when in high school and I was thinking of working in a NICU. I hope you get a lot out of this class and it helps you in your future studies.
My name is Jillian Arlinghaus. I am a junior in the nursing program. I am the second oldest of 7 children. I have 2 sisters and 4 brothers, and the ages range from 23 to 8. I just got married this past June, and have a 19 month old. I am also pregnant with our second child, another girl, and am due May 30th. I currently work at St. Elizabeth Edgewood as a Room Service Ambassador, as well as Allergy Partners of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky as a shot clinician. I plan to graduate in 2016 with a BSN in nursing. From there, I would like to work in either labor and delivery or pediatrics. Eventually I would like to become a nurse practitioner. I am interested to see what kind of topics are going to brought up and the ethical issues behind them. I also hope to see both ends of the spectrum, and not just my own.
ReplyDeleteJillian,
DeleteCongratulations on your marriage. Going to school, working, being a wife and a mother can't always be easy. I applaud you for your strength and ambition to follow your dreams.
Within the context of the class I will be really interested with what you have to say from a standpoint of a mother on different topics, can't wait.
Hi everyone! I am Abbie Alig, and I am a freshman Nursing Major. I am from a small town in Indiana, and am the oldest child in my family. I have a brother who is a junior in high school, and a sister who is a freshman. In my spare time, I love to do cheerleading, work at my family's Shell gas station, and go fishing. I hope to graduate from Thomas More with a BSN. After school, I would like to work with dialysis patients. I would love to work for a DaVita Dialysis clinic one day. When I am older, I'd like to receive my cosmetology degree. I am looking forward to the different discussions we talk about in class, and hear everyones' views on different topics. I think that this class will show me a different side of the medical field.
ReplyDeleteAbbie,
DeleteA BSN and a Cosmetology degree, that's pretty ambitious! I like the fact that you already have an idea of where you'd like to work once you graduate; I wish I could say the same for myself! I also think it's cool that your family owns a gas station! This class should be entertaining for you based on your interests in nursing. I think you'll enjoy it! I'm wondering which High School you went to though?
I went to East Central High School
DeleteAbbie,
DeleteWelcome to TMC!!! I too am a nursing major, if you need any help just ask! I have never thought about being a dialysis nurse, that is a very cool goal. I think you will learn a great deal about yourself in this class and in defending your beliefs and what not! Good luck this semester!
My name is Vic Newberry and I am a sophomore Biology major with a pre-pharmacy concentration. If I had to choose two worldly passions, they would have to be Science and UK Basketball. Regarding my academic goals, I plan on graduating Thomas More with a BA in Biology, then going down to UK to complete pharmacy school! As for my career goals, I plan on becoming a pharmacologist (drug design and delivery) and possibly becoming a technical sales representative for a pharmaceutical company. My personal goals are pretty broad, however. I just want to see the Bengals win a playoff game in my lifetime, a Red's World Series in my lifetime, and the continued success of UK Basketball. Those are goals in which I have no control, so I guess they're more like hopes. But, my actual personal goals are to get married, buy a nice house, and to one day own a Ferrari. I know that this class will play directly into my interests because pharmaceutical drugs are involved everywhere in medicine.
ReplyDeleteVic, UK has a great Pharmacy program! I know several of the pharmacist that I work with that graduated from there. They loved it! Best of luck!
DeleteVic, you are absolutely right that pharmaceutical drugs play a major roll in class discussion. Drugs are critical in most patient situations. I started out as a biology major here, and I was highly considering pharmacy as a career path. My plans have changed, but I hope you stick with it! Pharmacology is very important and rewarding. You have very high goals for yourself, which I admire. If you believe in yourself, you can achieve all of your goals! The only exceptions are the sport related ones, which you said are out of your control. (I have to throw in, Go Cards!)
DeleteMy name is Amanda Hagedorn. I am a junior and I am majoring in Nursing. I am from a small town called Ross which is just north of Cincinnati and just like a few others in class, I commute an hour to school. I am the youngest and only girl of three siblings. One of my brothers is a teacher while the other is a medically discharged veteran. My academic goal is to graduate from Thomas More with my BSN. After graduating, I would love to work at Cincinnati Children's in pediatric oncology. My hope is that this class truly opens my eyes to different ethical concerns in the medical field that I may eventually run in to. This course will help me to become a better nurse in the future because when medical related ethical cases are brought up, I will be able to respect the different viewpoints In the situation and understand without being biased.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Emily Lobenstein. I am a senior psychology major. I want to eventually go and get my masters for sports psychology. I have a dream of working in the NFL or some kind of professional sports team. Sports are a huge part of my life and I want to continue working in the field where that can be a part of it. Kentucky basketball is a huge part of my family and I was raised to Bleed Blue. I am from Florence, Ky. I have cheered all my life and love cheering in college. It takes up a huge part of my time. I work full time at a pharmacy and love my job. Working, going to school and cheerleading keep me so busy. I want to go somewhere away for Graduate school. I want to be able to travel and see different things. I plan on doing this before I settle down anywhere. I have 3 younger sisters that are a big part of my life. Moving out of my house this year was a big decision for me. I am hoping that I can relate this class to my major and learn more about the medical field along the way. I am very excited for this class and see what I can learn.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Miranda Jones. I am a sophomore sociology major. I went to Reading High School in Cincinnati. I ran track, wrestled and played soccer in high school. Now I run track for Thomas More. I want to get into adolescent counseling and social working when I get out of school. I hope to get a better understanding of ethics from this class and also I hope this class will help me deal with situations I may be faced with in my career.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Austin Corsmeier. I am a junior nursing major and Spanish minor. After I receive my BSN, I would like to go to graduate school to get my masters and either become a pediatric nurse practitioner or a CRNA. As a future health care provider, I think it is important to realize that a numerous ethical issues can be associated with the practice of medicine, both in terms of patient care as well as medical research. I hope that this class will allow me to see the ethics morality behind these issues from multiple viewpoints. With this information, I would be able to broaden my perspectives so that I could provide holistic care to each patient regardless of their medical viewpoints. This patient autonomy and my understanding will lead to the best and most efficient care possible.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Andrew Jensen. I am a freshman English major. Therefore I have no direct ties with biomedical ethics. However, almost all of us will face biomedical ethical issues at some point in our lives. In addition, as I writer I explore human nature through poetry and fiction. I am still undecided what to do as an English major, but I will pursue freelance writing while working a steady job related to my major, such as teaching English or working as a technical writer for a company.
ReplyDeleteAndrew,
DeleteWhen I was your age I hated writing. Now, a bit older, I realize its necessity. I applaud you for finding a passion that in today's society seems almost forgotten. It would be nice to see how your writing POV changes after learning various viewpoints and varying ways of thinking from this class. I am a strong believer that the personal experiences each of us has affects the decision we make later on in life, even on some subconscious level. Having been in school for awhile, I encourage you to speak up. It will be nice hearing the voice and viewpoint of someone much younger than I, and ultimately seeing how the age of social media and other varying factors have contributed towards your over all mindset.
Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Paul Renshaw and I am a sophomore Nursing Student who just recently just transferred from NKU. My direct correlation to Biomedical Ethics comes obviously, from my chosen career path. As far as my expectation for this class, I expect good, intelligent, passionate debate. I enjoy when to opposing view points clash together and how in the medical field I will have to do this same sort of thing. Furthermore, I expect to gain a lot of personal experience from the upper classmen of the nursing department, as it seems that a vast majority of my class cohorts are in the program as well. With regards to my career path, my ultimate goal is to graduate with my BSN, gain to experience in an ICU as soon as possible, and finally complete my CRNA. Lofty goals, especially for someone my age but I can do it.
My name is Michael Blewett and I am a senior Biology major. I will be graduating this spring and will hopefully be going to pharmacy school next year to start working on my doctorate. Currently, I am employed full time as a senior pharmacy technician with Walgreens. I already have several years experience with retail pharmacy, but my ultimate career goal would be to pursue a residency after pharmacy school in infectious disease and get a job in a hospital, consulting physicians on drug therapies in the treatment of infectious disease. I am hoping from this course that I will develop a strong background in ethics, particularly as it relates to the biomedical field. I hope that the lessons learned from this class will help me in my professional career as I encounter various situations.

ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Amanda Clark and I am a second year nursing student here at TMC. I plan on graduating with my BSN and go on to work at Childrens Hospital or another local hospital in labor and delivery. Biomedical Ethics will be a great class to widen my understanding of many different cultures and why some people make the decisions they do based on their own personal life. I am from the small town of Alexandria, right here in Kentucky, like many others I commute to school, though my drive is not as long as others, it takes me about 35 minutes to get here each day. I am the youngest of three children and the only girl, my brothers are 5 and 12 years older than me. I enjoy going to concerts, playing tennis, being a (HUGE) fan of the Cincinnati Reds, watching/attending sporting events and playing with my puppy.
ReplyDeleteI currently work at The Home Depot, and plan on staying there until I graduate, I absolutely love my job. Thomas More is a great college, I love the small community feel, I cannot wait to see what the rest of my years here have in store. Here is to learning and meeting new people!
My name in Danny Scholz. I transferred here last year from Ashland University. I play football here and hope to make millions as college football coach after I graduate. I live in Cincinnati (Clifton). I went to New Richmond High School in New Richmond, OH. I have lived in all 3 major cities in Ohio (Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati). From this class I hope to learn about and be able to have a good understanding of ethical decisions made everyday.
ReplyDeleteDanny,
DeleteYour career goals are set very high, and it's inspiring! Do you have a college in mind that you would like to coach at?
My name is Derek Torok, I come from across the ocean from Bethel, Ohio, making my commute to school about 35-40 minutes on a good day. I am a Junior in the Nursing program here at TMC and am currently employed as a CNA on a Medical Surgical unit at St. Elizabeth Hospital. After graduating with my BSN I plan on working in the MICU for a couple of years, later transferring to the ED because they do not accept new grads in most cases. I do plan on going back to school for my masters, becoming an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner by 25 is the plan, but I am still studying and learning the trade so this could change. I was kind of nervous starting this class with it being a lot of class participation, thinking I would not have much to say. But based on the syllabus and class description I am now really looking forward to it! I like to think of myself as very open minded and always trying to discuss and understand why people do what they do, or think what they think. I think that learning the ethical theory will be a great reference while deciphering the ethical viewpoints of others in my profession. I also expect that discussing these ethical dilemmas will be great practice to not forcing opinions on people, but rather accept their viewpoint as their own.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Alex Henn and I am a Junior Nursing major. I run Track and Cross Country. I do not feel as if I have an absolute idea of what I want moving forward and for me that is okay. I have goals like going into the Navy and then maybe after being a Nurse, however, time will tell I guess. I love discussions and this topic is very interesting to me because I love the blurriness of these kinds of topics. I hope to gain a better understanding of the topic through the rest of you. Believe it or not for as much as I talk I also listen more than people think. I am really looking forward to the topics we will discuss and also hearing from all of you.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Gabrielle Probert, but you can call me Gabby. I'm a sophomore pre-nursing major from Cape Cod Massachusetts and plan on transferring to Salem State University after this semester. I plan on becoming a RN and working in Boston then potentially becoming a rehabilitation nurse. So far, that's all I've got figured out but planning too much ahead isn't really my thing. A big part of why I want to become a nurse and why I am who I am is because of my history and you will learn a lot about me simply by knowing it. When I was 4 years old, my mom was diagnosed with ALS and ever since I was younger I've always wanted to be a nurse. I learned a lot about health care and taking care of people at a young age and I couldn't image myself doing anything else. I am nervous about the class participation aspect of this class because I typically don't share my thoughts unless I have a strong opinion. However, I do enjoy discussing ethics pertaining to the medical field, specifically death with dignity. I'm a very open minded person therefore, I am open to people's thoughts on certain ethical issues.
