  1. After reading the Angelina Jolie Pitt diary, her situation is still very touching. I believe her last line is really accurate. "Knowledge is power". This knowledge can come from knowing all of your options as a patient or know the background story and stats about what diseases or illness you are prone to in your family line.
Every time I go to the doctors office and have to fill out the question on the front page that asks about family history I cringe a little bit. Every time a box is checked under the cancer section and I have to write my Grandma's name down and then my mother's, it is so surreal.
To know that an american icon is going through something so real that affects many Americans and women all across the globe is enough motivation, that I too could get through something so terrifying.

    1. Amanda, I am so sorry to hear about the struggles your family has with cancer. I hope with more stories like these you will hopefully be able to protect yourself from such a terrible disease. Hopefully as science progresses your genetic disease will have a good outlook.

    2. Amanda,

I am sorry to here about your hardships within your family with cancer. I completely agree with you that having a elebrity tat is very well known carries a huge impact on the regular every day people in America. To have some who is wiling to stand up and shre their story, even though sharing their story places them in a position of vulnerability and criticism, i think it really is needed. Lik you said, it serves as a kind of motivation and insporation. She gives empowerment o other women who are going through the same type of situations, which means so much to these other women. I think that if more poeple did this, then therewould be such a huge support based and people would not have to fee so alone and isolated and wothout hope.

  2. I thought that the Angelina Jolie article would be very motivating for women who are going through the same struggle that she had to go through. I also liked that she was not trying to advertise removing your ovaries or fallopian tubes with a slight risk of having cancer later in life. She even pointed out a few other options that women can take in these situations. Overall, this article was one that gives hope to women going through a similar situation as hers.

    1. Jillian,

I also thought it was great that Angelina Jolie was not trying to advertise the surgery she had. She said she did what was best for her but that it wasn't for all women. She also told of other options that were available to women who are struggling with the same kind of situation. I think that this was very helpful beasue it further showed that she was not endorsing this surgery. She focus more of the disease and more on trying to empower women who are struggling just like her. I think that she serves as a huge inspiration and supporter to wome who are struggling with this disease.

    2. I agree, I dont think Angelina Jolie's reasoning was to advertise her surgery or to promote it. I think it was almost to raise awareness in a way to the cancer and her reasonings behind having the surgery done, She does not endorse the surgery nor does she think its reasonable for everyone to have done. She expresses her personal beliefs and brings it to the limelight

  3. Angelina Jolie's article was very moving. She is a strong woman and made a very tough decision for her self as a woman. Since she is in the spot light i think it is wonderful to hear her story so many women in the world deal with this and i think it would had to feel like a women with the lost of breast, and your reproductive system it does not other physically make us a women but the hormones help suppress our emotions. Angelina is such a good symbol for other women going through the same thing showing them that you can fight this and still keep your women identity.

  4. I really enjoyed the Angelina Jolie article. I believe it spoke to people all over the world. This article gave women the power to make and awesome decision that could honestly change the rest of their lives for the better. Like Amanda, my mom also had cancer so this is something I am going to have to face as well. It is not an easy decision to make knowing the consequences you get from it. When you sit down and really think of the benefits that the surgery will give you, I believe that most people would think the good out ways the bad. my personal perspective may be different than someone else's that isn't immediately faced with a decision like this. I think more rationally and more personally about it just because of my personal experience.

  5. After reading Angelina's article I am in awe. She is a role model for all women, because she knew her genetics and her risks of developing cancer and made a proactive move to prevent cancer. Angelina is a very courageous and i don't know that at this point in my life i could make that kind of decision. Angelina said something like, having my breasts and ovaries and Fallopian tubes removed doesn't make me an less of woman. I am who i am regardless of what parts i have. I applauded her making that statement because she wants to live and cherish her life. She did what she had to do to save her life.

  6. Angelina Pitt in the article “Angelina Jolie Pitt: Diary of a Surgery” could not have handled her situation any better than the way she did. The last line in the article she wrote “knowledge is key” and she is exactly right and showed that with her confidence in her decisions. Knowing her family history and understanding her test results and her exact situation, while researching alternate interventions allowed her to come to a final conclusion of the oophorectomy. I feel her decision was extremely acceptable and respectable, and I also think that everyone should know their risk factors based on their family history and educate themselves on possible preventative interventions or lifestyle changes that can reduce or rid of the risk for such diseases.

    1. I agree. She even specifically states, "The most important thing is to learn about the options and choose what is right for you personally." She did what she wholeheartedly believed what was right for her. Furthermore, she wants women to do research for themselves and come to their own conclusions and choices, not to just follow her choices blindly. I agree that knowledge is power is definitely the key to this article and these situations.

  7. On the topic of genes/genetics, here is the article is was talking about in class..
    http://metronews.ca/news/vancouver/1333888/new-drug-for-huntingtons-disease-to-be-tested-in-vancouver/
The article is a little vague and lacks detail but says that researches will be using "gene silencing" when dealing with patients with Huningtons disease. It does not specify whether this drug is designed to stop the progression of the disease or completely cure the disease (I'm guessing stopping the progression). Here's a piece of the article..
"Researchers found that the level of mutant protein is higher in patients with more advanced disease. The concentration of mutant protein also predicts the severity of movement and cognitive problem in patients, according to the study.

For the clinical trial, scientists will use the test to monitor the effect of the drug in reducing the mutant protein in the brains of Huntington’s disease patients.

The drug, which was developed by California-based Isis Pharmaceuticals, will be administered into the patients’ cerebrospinal fluid to “turn off” the mutant gene in the brain, said Leavitt."

    1. It seems that this article is almost just there to give hope, which is nice because it means that research is doing its job and finding new ways to "predict" which can hopefully lead to a cure for diseases such as Huntingtons. This is actually an interesting article as well because a lot of cancers now that have a strong genetic predisposition are being fought by gene therapy and focusing on the specific gene that causes cancers.

  8. The article, "Scientists Seek Ban on Method of Editing the Human Genome" raises some good points. It does not call for a complete and utter abandonment of this new germline genome technique discovered in 2012, it just says scientists should avoid attempting germline genome modification for clinical application in humans until the full implications are discussed among scientific and governmental organizations, even in lax jurisdictions. People may see this as delaying progress, but as long as the issues and discussions happen sooner rather than later, I agree that the risks and implications ought to be discussed. Once these issues are settled, research should continue according in accordance with the new polices and regulations that are established.
