HC as a right? (Exam Q)

Kai Nielsen writes:  “If there is the need for some particular regime of care and the society has the resources to meet that need, without undermining structures protecting other at least equally urgent needs, then, ceteris parabus, the society if it is a decent society, must do so” (p. 652).  Do you agree with Nielsen?  Does his argument apply to the U.S.?  Explain.  Can a just society refuse to provide health care to all of its citizens?  Is health care a right, and if so, what kind?  For whom is it a right (citizens, military, the elderly, children, all, none?).

  2. Nielsen provides a valid argument for the regime of care of a just, decent society, and I feel it is completely applicable to the United States. In our society we have the means to provide basic health care needs to all citizens, and for this reason it is a right. I feel that a just society cannot refuse to provide health care to its citizens, because while having the means to do so, you are excluding people based on certain parameters. If this is the case then our current system is not just, and we need to develop a system that provides basic care to all, including education which could help in the prevention of certain health problems resulting in a decrease in the need for treatment of preventable problems which saves money as well. I feel as a student nurse I am able to tell if something is wrong with me and know means of prevention and treatment, which may involve lifestyle changes, but will ultimately lead to a healthier and happier life. Although not the only answer, just educating the public, which I feel is also a right, will greatly reduce the treatment of preventable problems leading to a more just healthcare system.

  3. I agree with Neilsen that if we have the resources, we should provide healthcare because I believe healthcare is a right but only for certain people. Such as the elderly, children, handicapped people, military and college students. Preventative care and screening should be available for more terminal illnesses and vaccines and not as much for minor illnesses. However, healthcare that should be provided would be basic-like the healthcare I described in class.

  4. Let’s look back to 1943 when U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt crafted his "Second Bill of Rights." He declared 'freedom of want' to be one of four essential liberties for human security. His definition of freedom included, "the right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health.” Furthermore, Article 25 of The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights states, ““Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care [. . .]” Without a doubt, it seems as though at least form of health care ought to available to each and every member of the United States. Therefore, I do agree with Neilsen and according to these definitions it seems to be a positive right for everyone.

  5. I believe that health care is a freedom a positive right. I think that all people deserve the right to have health care insurance and to be covered. I don't think we should all have the same insurance because my parents work hard and pay into the system and I think they deserve to have good insurance plan. Those who are less fortunate should still get insurance and have it cover the minimum stuff. (preventative care, pharmacy meds, dentists, vision care, hearing care, ect.) I think we all need insurance but those who can afford it shouldn't have to take same insurance as those who are poor. It should be stratified insurance network, based on income.

    1. I agree with you that not everyone should be provided with the same insurance. Those who pay more into the system deserve more care but I defititely think everyone deserves some basic form of care at least. I think a stratified network, as you mentioned, is a great idea.

    2. I do not think that everyone should be provided with the same health insurance, because there is some people that just work their way around the system. But i do not think that you should be denied because of being unable to financially afford medications.

    3. I also agree with you that not everyone should have the same coverage. Everyone should have some form of coverage, but those who earn more and put more into the system should have a higher level of care available to them. The problem with everyone having the same type of coverage, as we see in many countries that have such a system, is that many people end up waiting very long periods of time to get certain types of care. By having different levels of coverage based on income, we can attempt to avoid this problem.

  6. I agree with Nielsen and I think it is definitely applicable to the United States. A just society is a society built on fairness and equity which the US is. I don't think that a just society can refuse to provide health care to all of its citizens. Not providing health care to someone because they cannot afford it would not be considered fair. Health care should be a positive right to all citizens because people have the right to a healthy life regardless of their financial status.

    1. I completely agree with the aspect of treating everyone equal, i do not think that a patient should be denied of a certain medication or treatment because of financial status, because there are always ways around those things.

    2. Financial issues are always a problem that we run into when it comes to things that people need. This shouldn't be a reason that people are denied of things that they need.

  7. I completely agree with Nielson. I think that the medical system should be as fair as possible, and if the care can potentially be provided then they must do everything in their power to provide the treatment, whether or not if they can afford it, there is always ways to work that out. Especially it if it is life or death situations. I think that medical system should do everything in their power to be able to provide treatment to every patient.

  8. I agree with Nielsen and believe that health care is a positive right. I believe that what Nielsen is saying applies to the US. I also believe that everyone should be provided health care. The health care doesn’t have to be equal because those who can afford it can afford better health care, but for those who can’t afford everything should still be given the minimum as Lauren said included preventative care, pharmacy meds, dentists, vision care, hearing care, etc. I also think that patients should be given equal treatment when going to a doctor or hospital, their financial status should not be the basis on how well one is treated. We are all still equals and there are ways to help those who can’t afford it pay off the expenses.

  9. Working at a Pharmacy I see all different kinds of people and the medications they get and the amount of money that they pay for it. I will see a person who will pick up a pain pill for no charge and drive away in their expensive car. i am not one to judge but there is something about this that is not right. I believe that everyone should have the ability to have basic health care. This would allow for less money to be spent on problems that worsen because of lack there of. However, as many people have stated there needs to be a fine line that is crossed on what kind of basic health care. There are people that do pay more money for health care and should be provided with maybe better care. This is hard to say because there many be a case where a doctor is expensive and someone who doesn't have enough money needs to see him or her. There needs to be a way to be able to work around this and find the best ways to handle these issues when they come up. They say that everyone can go to school with help. There should be ways that everyone can have health care with help as well.
