Ideal HC system (Exam Q)

What does your ideal health care system look like? (Briefly sketch it out—what kinds of services should it provide?  Who is covered?  How is it paid for?).

  1. In my opinion, an ideal healthcare system would have three plans: Plan A, Plan B, and Medicare. By comparison, in general Plan A would have lower premiums than Plan B, but select services would come with a higher copay, whereas Plan B would have higher premiums than Plan A, but would offer additional benefits and reduced copays. Each plan would have multiple tiers offering different services at different copay rates. Medicare would be available to those over 65 years of age as well as those with qualifying disabilities. There would not be a Medicaid Plan under this system, but assistance programs for each of these plans would be available for those who need it and qualify. The idea is that the insured are collectively pulling their resources together by paying into either Plan A or Plan B, whereas the Medicare Plan would be federally funded.

The role of government, in addition to funding the Medicare Plan, would be to help reduce or eliminate the percentage of uninsured Americans. This would be accomplished by subsidizing the insured by offering tax credits, and imposing tax penalties on the uninsured. Currently, the uninsured are able to manipulate the system fairly easily and receive services, like emergency medicine, at the expense of the tax payers while they continue to avoid paying into insurance plans. The tax penalties for the uninsured would be collected and used to pay for services for the uninsured, like emergency medicine. The burden of providing care to the uninsured would then no longer be on the insured taxpayers, but rather on the uninsured themselves. However, the primary intent here would be to reduce or eliminate the percentage of people uninsured.

    1. I think it is a great idea having different plans for which you were able to afford. Thats kind of the way i would set mine up. I actually like how you have yours set up a lot better, because of the way you have resolutions to the use of taxes

    2. The other thing I have considered is that if we did have a Medicaid type program, we structure it differently. Working in Pharmacy, I deal with insurance companies on a daily basis. And there is not enough time to go into it on the blog or even in my paper, but we really need a major reform of Medicare and Medicaid, especially with regard to the way providers and pharmacies get reimbursed for services. Having said that, I think a better approach to the Medicaid system would be to basically create a deductible type setup, where patients are responsible for paying a set dollar amount out of pocket each month. Once this amount has been reached, any further coverage is covered 100%. I see too many people abusing the system. There is so much waste and fraud with both Medicare and Medicaid. I think we need to create a better system for having people who are poor still contribute some money.

  2. In my opinion, an ideal healthcare system would be two-tiered where the government provides basic care and private insurance would be an option if someone wanted to pay for it. With basic healthcare, everything I described in class would be provided-which does not include preventative care. Medicare would also be provided with the same requirements there are now. Private insurance would provide preventative care, more options for physicians, medications, and locations, and medical devices. The government provided healthcare would be paid for with taxes and private healthcare would be paid for by the individual. Basic healthcare would be provided for children, military, college students, disabled people and elderly people as well.

    1. I like your idea about a two-tiered system where the government provides basic healthcare and the optional private insurance for those who can afford it covers anything extra. The only thing that I disagree with is not including preventative care under the government plan. By preventative care, I mean things like paying for an annual physical, routine blood work, and vaccinations. In my opinion, I think we need to focus on covering basic preventative care because it isn't very expensive and promotes the general health and well-being of the patient.

  3. i would have to say that my ideal healthcare system would be where it is provided for everyone, but is based on whether you are apart of the working class, or not. I think that there should be a better covered health plan for people who are working and are able to afford it. I think that the healthcare plan should provide basic care, medications, various locations, and post diagnosis action. I think that the two different health plans should be paid for monthly, but mainly covered with taxes.

  4. I am not sure that there is a correct answer for the right health care person. Money is the big issue that should be discussed when thinking of the proper health care. There are people that are less fortunate that deserve to be helped with it comes to health care. This does not mean that they should constantly be given hand outs. I think that this is one of the issues that we find when it comes to health care that is of less cost or free.Yes everyone deserves health care but where do we draw the line. I think that there needs to be a system that is set up that can help people in need but also for people that will not work to better themselves. This is not saying that they don't deserve health care. There are children of these individuals that are in need of medication as well. This is more of the issues of parents wanting to buy pain medication for themselves instead of antibiotics for their children. Believe it or not this actually happens and it is sad to see.
